LIVING IN NEW ZEALAND’S WILDERNESS FOR 8 YEARS
Hear Miriams story about putting your life into a pack and living in the wilderness of NZ for 8 years.
In this She Adventures NZ podcast episode, host Senka Radonich is joined by International Bestseller and Adventurer Miriam Lancewood.
I first heard of Miriam when someone introduced me to her book Woman In The Wilderness. I couldn’t put it down.
Her story sparked an adventure in me I’d be wanting to do for a decade.
So with that, at 40, I sold 2/3rd of my stuff, built out the back of Hank the Tank, my 4WD and traveled NZ for 5 months exploring NZ.
When I launched the She Adventures NZ Podcast, Miriam was the first person in my list to reach out to, and to say I was stoked she said was an understatement.
Join Miriam and I as we talk about
- Her journey to deciding to live in the wilderness for 8 years
- The learnings that came hard and fast in that time

A story of survival, love & self discovery in New Zealand
Inspirational story of adventure and bravery, of how one woman learned to dig deep and push the boundaries in order to discover what really matters in life.
Miriam Lancewood is a young Dutch woman living a primitive, nomadic life in the heart of New Zealand’s mountains with her New Zealand husband Peter Raine. She lives simply in a tent or hut and survives by hunting wild animals, foraging edible plants and using minimal supplies. For the last six years she has lived this way, through all seasons, often cold, hungry and isolated in the bush. She loves her life and feels free, connected to the land and happy.
This book tells her story, including the very practical aspects of such a life: her difficulties learning to hunt with a bow and arrow, struggles to create a warm environment in which to live, attempts to cross raging rivers safely and find ways through the rugged mountains and dense bush. This is interwoven with her adjustment to a very slow pace of life, her relationship with her much older husband, her thoughtful observations of the few other people they encounter in this time, and her growing awareness of a strong spiritual connection to the natural world.
There’s a lot of drama out there in the wilds and Miriam knows how to spin a good yarn with tension, colour and light, making this a gripping and engaging read. Reminiscent of both adventure writing like Wild and nature writing like H is for Hawk this is perfect for those exploring the idea of living an authentic, real life.
‘My life is free, random and spontaneous. This in itself creates enormous energy and clarity in body and mind.’

MEET YOUR PODCAST HOST… SENKA
I’m Senka, creator of She Adventures NZ and host to the She Adventures NZ Podcast.
I’m an adventure seeker and a women’s adventure crudasor and I’m here to showcase all the amazing adventures we epic women can get out and do here in beautiful Aotearoa.
I grew up in Auckland, played sports at school, but didn’t discover my love for exploring the outdoors till my early 20’s.
It was then that I launched Adventure Girls, kick ass adventures for women, and I’ve been on a mission ever since then to inspire as many women in NZ to get out doors and do cool shit.
At 40 I finally said ‘HELL YES’ to something that I had wanted to for at least a decade…
With that, I sold 2/3rd of everything I owned, built out the back of my 4WD ‘Hank The Tank’ and traveled New Zealand for 5 months and explored the true beauty of my country.
I saw some amazing places through out New Zealand and meet incredible every day women out there adventuring despite their circumstances.
It’s been impossible to ignore my obsession with the outdoors over the past 20 years, no matter the challenges that have come up. I always feel myself being pulled back to it.
This year I’m super pumped to have re-birthed Adventure Girls into She Adventures NZ, dedicated to conversations with inspiring everyday women in New Zealand about ‘why they adventure’, the challenges and struggles they have had and how adventure has positively influenced their lives.
I’m so stoked you’re here and I can’t wait to catch you out on an adventure real soon.
So come join the fun… can’t wait to see you out there!
